Mexico has long been a favorite destination for foreigners looking to retire or invest in real estate. With its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and friendly culture, it's no wonder so many people are interested in making this country their new home.
There are two main areas that retirees and people looking to invest in a second home tend to focus on in Mexico: Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya.
Both areas have a lot to offer, but they’re also vastly different. Los Cabos is known for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and famous residents, while the Riviera Maya offers a more relaxed lifestyle, focused on ecotourism and cultural experiences.
Are you interested in buying a second home in one of these stunning locations? Below we’ll tell you all about them and what makes them so unique!
Cabo, as it’s affectionately called, is a smaller destination than the Riviera Maya. It’s perfect for those who want to enjoy the nightlife and luxury restaurants that are constantly opening their doors here. It’s also known for its exclusive resorts and golf courses.
For its part, the Riviera Maya is a much larger area that encompasses several towns and beach spots, such as Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Akumal. It’s an ideal place to buy if you’re looking for a more relaxed lifestyle; there are plenty of beaches, all with turquoise blue waters, as well as Mayan ruins and ecotouristic parks.
Weather-wise, Cabo’s usually warmer and drier than the Riviera Maya, although the latter’s located on the Yucatan Peninsula, which tends to be more humid, leading the area to feel hotter than it actually is.
Los Cabos is known as a high-end destination mainly visited by foreigners, while the Riviera Maya has a more relaxed atmosphere, interweaving luxury with the local culture.
If you’re looking for a place to bask in exclusive services, then Cabo’s a great option. But if you want to experience more of the “real Mexico,” the Riviera Maya may be your best choice.
This doesn’t mean that in the Riviera Maya you can’t find luxury services (of course there are and they are incredible). But, in general, the area holds a strong connection to the rich Mayan heritage and Mexican culture, which sets it apart from other locations.
Of course, both destinations have amazing beaches to relax in the sun! However, the sea of Los Cabos is usually cold, with high and strong waves, so it’s better for diving or simply admiring. The sea of the Riviera Maya, on the other hand, is warm with tranquil waves, making it ideal for swimming.
Another key difference is that Los Cabos is home to some of the best golf courses in Mexico, while the Riviera Maya is better known for its plethora of archaeological sites to explore.
The entire area of Baja (where Los Cabos is located) is fascinating, with desert landscapes that meet with mountains and the sea. There are various small towns immersed in the surrounding nature, such as Todos Santos and El Triunfo, which are very beautiful to visit.
The Riviera Maya area is a jungle, with many natural beauties such as cenotes, underground rivers, lagoons, and eco-archaeological parks.
Finally, it’s important to mention the ease of travel and flight possibilities.
Both locations have international airports. However, the airport that serves the entire area of the Riviera Maya is Cancun, which is the second most important airport in the nation (after Mexico City), so its offerings of international flights and destinations are a bit greater.
The best place for you will depend on your personal preferences! If you’re looking for a luxurious setting where you can play golf on world-class courses, Cabo is your best option.
But if you want to immerse yourself in Mexican culture and explore its rich history, the Riviera Maya is the better destination.
There’s no doubt that both Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya are amazing places to have a second home that you can enjoy whenever you want; both are absolutely beautiful havens with much to offer their residents.
