The Tren Maya, or Mayan Train, is one of the largest and most ambitious projects that the Mexican government, under the leadership of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (also known by his initials: AMLO), has proposed.
Once complete, the train will travel through five Mexican states in the southeast: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo (in the Riviera Maya). There’ll be more than 1,500 km of paved roads that will connect several locations in the region.
The goal of the project is to push growth in both the tourist and economic development of the Yucatan peninsula. This new route will establish 19 new train stations, 12 stops, and will allow several small Mayan towns and villages to have easy accessibility for tourists and visitors.
The Tren Maya will offer three transportation services: one for local passengers who live and work in the region, another for tourists and a third service for transporting cargo.
The Mexican government estimates that this mobility project will attract upwards of 3 million tourists per year for the first few years and will transport approximately 8,000 passengers per day.
If all goes as planned, visitors from all over the world will be able to move around the Yucatan Peninsula aboard the Tren Maya beginning in 2023.
There’ll be three types of passenger cars available: the"Xiinbal", which will be used for tourists, transporting both first class and economy ticketed passengers. The "Janal" cars will include a dining car and will offer fantastic gastronomic experiences from 5 of the best Mexican chefs in the region, cooking traditional dishes from the states that the Tren Maya will pass through. Finally, the “P’atal” car, which is specifically designed for long-stay passengers and includes full cabins as well as private showers.
The tourist offer of the Tren Maya is the best known, but its purpose will also extend to transportation for locals who need to travel to work as well as serving as a cargo vessel that will transport jet fuel to nearby airports, among other cargo.
